Our softball program is designed for girls from 7-14 years of age.  Players in Kindergarten are encouraged to join our Rookies league!  There are four age groups for softball and each is based on the players grade.  

AYS&B league play strives to create fair play opportunities for players of all skill levels.  Coaches are advised to consider a player’s abilities and may not put a player in certain positions in order to keep the child safe.  Our goal is to create a passion for the sport of baseball through team camaraderie and sportsmanship.  

Depending on weather, the season starts in late April and continues through the end of June.  Practices are generally held two times per week before season games begin and are based on field and coach availability.  Once games begin there are generally one or two games per week.  Practice may occur in addition to games, but generally no more than once per week when games are being played.  Specific dates and times for practice and games depend on field availability and the coach’s discretion.  In general, half of the games will be played in Altoona while the other half will be played within 30 miles of Altoona.

Rookies (6 years old OR Will be 5 by May 1st)

This is an entry level age group for boys and girls who are playing for the first time.  This age group uses softer baseballs and stresses the fundamentals of throwing, fielding, and hitting.  It is a developmental league for kids of all skill levels, with a focus on learning and having fun.  The schedule normally consists of 10-12 games and all games are played in Altoona.  

8U Age Group (7-8 years old AS OF JANUARY 1st)

This is an entry level age group for girls who are playing softball for the first time.  It is the next step after Rookies as the coaches do the pitching.  This age group stresses the fundamentals of throwing, fielding, and hitting and the games are focused on learning.  The schedule includes 10-12 games for the season.

10U Age Group (9-10 years old AS OF JANUARY 1st)

This age group further stresses fundamentals of fielding, hitting, and throwing but also introduces girls to pitching.  Base running skills, defense and game situations are also stressed.  This age group will play in the Chippewa Valley Fastpitch League with some travel involved within a 30 mile radius of Altoona.  Home games are played in Altoona.  The schedule includes 12-15 games for the season, concluding with a league tournament. 

12U Age Group (11-12 years old AS OF JANUARY 1st)

This age group will be more competitive, following ASA rules, with a few exceptions.  All aspects of softball are stressed at this level and fundamentals are further reinforced.  This age group will play in the Chippewa Valley Fastpitch League with some travel involved within a 30 mile radius of Altoona and home games played in Altoona. The season schedule will consist of 12-15 games, concluding with a league tournament. 

14U Age Group (13-14 year old AS OF JANUARY 1st)

This age group is designed to prepare players for High School softball.  Focus is on honing skills in pitching, defense, and offense. Again, ASA rules will be followed and games are more competitive.  The season will consist of 15-18 games, concluding with a league tournament.
